Building these two pieces will give the woodworker an excellent introduction to Shaker furniture. The central stretcher on the 9-1/2" by 40" pine bench is is permanently fastened to the legs with single wedged "through-tenons". The top is fastened to the legs with the same joinery, eliminating the need for any metal fasteners on this 18" high bench. The 7-7/8", by 17", by 10-1/2" high secondary bench is similarly assembled without metal fasteners, a typical Shaker practice.

All joinery is shown in actual size, curved workpieces are all in full size and you can measure and trace straight from the drawing. A bill of materials doubles as an exact cutting list, there is a detailed exploded diagram, and all hardware requirements are provided. The exploded diagram is so detailed that project specific assembly instructions are not provided. A special booklet entitled Guide to Building Wood Furniture is included with each Furniture Designs, Inc. plan and includes many tips explaining the "component theory" of woodworking.

Measure twice, cut once -- the paramount rule of building! Keep your stains and glues from freezing in your non-heated workshop by storing them in a plastic food cooler. Neat! Keep your table saw push stick close at hand by fastening it to the front of your saw table with velcro or magnets so you can quickly grab it when needed. Welcome fellow woodworker! Cloths used to wipe stain can be safely air dried in a well ventilated area away from pets and children. A roll up window blind or shade is a perfect place to store woodworking plans -- just tape them down and let the shade roll them up. Covering the back side of sandpaper with duct tape will make it last MUCH longer. Easily remove rusted screws by heating the head with a soltering iron -- it will expand, then contract making it easy to remove. Use a moist cloth to slightly dampen your hands before feeding stock through a cutter -- it gives you a much better grip on the stock.
