Old croquet mallets, cut down to size, make inexpensive backup woodworking mallets! Covering the back side of sandpaper with duct tape will make it last MUCH longer. Use a moist cloth to slightly dampen your hands before feeding stock through a cutter -- it gives you a much better grip on the stock.
