The tips of different sizes of nails can be used as drill bits, working well on most wood stocks. Extend the life of your tack cloths by putting them in baby food jars or ziplock storage bags. Welcome fellow woodworker! Covering the back side of sandpaper with duct tape will make it last MUCH longer. White pencils are very useful in woodworking...they make easy to see lines on darker wood stocks. A roll up window blind or shade is a perfect place to store woodworking plans -- just tape them down and let the shade roll them up. Measure twice, cut once -- the paramount rule of building! Use a moist cloth to slightly dampen your hands before feeding stock through a cutter -- it gives you a much better grip on the stock. Abrasive wheels can be cleaned of goo with cooking spray -- it also helps prevent buildup of particulate matter. If you have to bend small pieces of wood, wrap them in a damp towel and put them in the microwave for 2 minutes on high -- be certain no metal is present. Petroleum jelly and cooking oils make perfect inexpensive, non-toxic light stains for projects. Easily remove rusted screws by heating the head with a soltering iron -- it will expand, then contract making it easy to remove. Cloths used to wipe stain can be safely air dried in a well ventilated area away from pets and children. Dented wood can often be repaired by heating a damp cloth with an iron over the dent...the wood will expand, filling the hole.
