If you have to bend small pieces of wood, wrap them in a damp towel and put them in the microwave for 2 minutes on high -- be certain no metal is present. Petroleum jelly and cooking oils make perfect inexpensive, non-toxic light stains for projects. Keep your table saw push stick close at hand by fastening it to the front of your saw table with velcro or magnets so you can quickly grab it when needed. White pencils are very useful in woodworking...they make easy to see lines on darker wood stocks. Old croquet mallets, cut down to size, make inexpensive backup woodworking mallets! Covering the back side of sandpaper with duct tape will make it last MUCH longer. Easily remove rusted screws by heating the head with a soltering iron -- it will expand, then contract making it easy to remove. Keep your stains and glues from freezing in your non-heated workshop by storing them in a plastic food cooler. Neat! Extend the life of your tack cloths by putting them in baby food jars or ziplock storage bags. Measure twice, cut once -- the paramount rule of building! Dented wood can often be repaired by heating a damp cloth with an iron over the dent...the wood will expand, filling the hole. Use a moist cloth to slightly dampen your hands before feeding stock through a cutter -- it gives you a much better grip on the stock. Welcome fellow woodworker!
